    transmission and driveshaft ?"s

hi, im replacing an automatic transmission, the one that was in the car had no guibo and 4 bolts on the output shaft. the driveshaft as well has 4 bolts on the front of it and the rear where it bolts to the diff. the replacement transmission is the same kind, but it had a guibo on it and a 3 bolt output shaft. oh yea this it on an 87 325es. so what i want to know is:

#1 why did it have 4 bolts and no guibo and all others are 3 on each side with a guibo?

#2 can i swap output shafts?

#3 what size socket is needed on the back of the transmission to remove the nut holding the output shaft on?

any help is appreciated, and yes i do have a bentley so i will be looking this up when i get out there to work on the car.

    What ?
I can't believe you are in Dallas and did not come to me for a trans .
I have several good 4hp22's taking up valuable space .
Could have given you a deal on a 5-spd swap as well .

But alas here are some answers for you :

#1 The crappy Eta's and E34 M20's used this set-up while the "i" cars used the Guibo and 3-bolt .

    #2 Yes .

#3 Pretty sure its a 30mm but it has to be a deep thin walled socket .
You can buy a cheapie socket and grind down the last 3/4 inch of it to work .

yea i have an extra getrag 260 layin around for my '90 325i when it decides to go out if ever. but this car is for my girlfriends mom and she cant drive a stick. ao im stuck with swappin autos. if i would have known i would came to you. i got it off ebay but it was from a guy on bf.c and i got it for $100 and it included all the stuff to go with it. i just got the trans. out yesterday and am going out to midlothian to try and get the new one in today if it dont start rainin again. maybe you or anyone else in the area wanna help me install it. i know its simple but ive only done a few fwd auto trans installs. i have done tons of 5 speed fwd and rwd trans. installs and this shouldnt be that much different this is my first rwd auto trans. install.

I'm actually buttoning up a 5-spd swap today so I won't be avail to help in person .

Just a straight r&r should be cake .
If you have not dropped the old trans yet my advice would be to use a long assed extension going over the trans to get to the top bolts .

Also I'd drain the trans cooler and lines of old fluid as well as use a replacement converter .
No telling whats going throught the old fluid since the old trans is toast .

yea i dropped the trans yesterday. the replacement trans. came with a torque converter. and yea went and picked up a 24" extension and it worked like a charm. the only bitch part is the starter bolts. it took me like an hour to figure out on the top starter bolt, it doesnt need to be held by a wrench while i use a socket on the other side. the bell housing makes the nut stay still while i loosen it. i was trying to get all kinds of sockets and wrenches in there and then just gave up and started loosening it from the back and it came out. i felt dumb after that. ha.

oh yea thanks for the help, i was kinda worried about the trans. differences. now im tryin to track down a thin walled 30mm socket. i may have to do what you said and grind the outside down. my bench grinder should do the job right?
