    Shifter tilted forward

I picked up an 88 convertible with a blown engine at an auction. I've installed a new engine in it. I didn't have any chance to speak to the previous owner, so I have no clue what he might have changed. The shifter works fine, but it is tilted forward so that the shifter is straight up in 2nd, leaning forward in neutral, and almost hitting the console in first. I don't see any way to adjust the shifter position. It's controlled by the aluminum bracket attached to the back of the engine.

It looks like it must have a part from another year or model? Anyone have any ideas. Is shortening the shifter rod an acceptable way to deal with this?

Unless the shifter feels very sloppy and loose (worn out bushings) I'd tend to think that a PO replaced part of the shifter with the wrong parts, or bent the shift lever.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I bet you have a Z3 shifter in there...as what you are describing sounds just like my Z3 shifter.

I don't know why I am telling you this: I hate you.

You found a 'vert at auction, dirt cheap.

      Now post pics, bastard!

If it's a z3 shifter (or any shifter with a bent arm) it could be installed backwards...
