    Center Support Brearing crap

Well I am running the e36 325 driveshaft and that center support doesn't fit in the e30 so I bought a new one and put it on. I preloaded it like you are supposed to and it worked great for about a month. I just started to get a nice clunk and grinding sound so I lifted the car and noticed that the new bearing has the rubber ripped ALL the way around. I didn't have any vibrations or anything before it went out. I really don't get why it would have gone out so quick.

This kinda has me wondering how it would be if I just did away w/ the rubber part of the bearing for good. I am considering welding up something for the actual bearing to slide into and then sit in the original center support bearing housing. I guess it would be like having a single piece driveshaft? Does that sound like a good idea or a horrible one? lol

How about you just fix your driveline vibration issue ?

Even if you don't feel it obviously something is going on .
D-shaft could be cocked or be in a bind also .

Well the reason why there's no vibration is because the CSB was doing a LOT of work keeping the driveshaft running smooth. Which means the center joint is likely going bad, or the driveshaft halves were put together very close to in phase, but off by maybe a tooth.

When you remove the driveshaft from the car, move the joint back and forth in its range of motion. If it is notchy in the first few degrees of motion, it is bad, and you will need to replace the driveshaft.

yeah you could be right about that fred. It just supprized me how fast it went out. I bought the driveshaft used and it came in 2 pieces but it was marked. But I guess it could be slightly off. There is a shop pretty close here that I can take the driveshaft and get it rebalanced.

But is there any reason that BMW had a two piece driveshaft other than making it easy to get out? The driveshaft shop near me said they would make me a single piece for not too much $$. It seems like it would be better to have a single one to get the power down to the ground more efficiently but who knows.

And thats the reason I asked about making a solid center support bearing. To maybe more efficiently put power to the gound and still be able to remove the driveshaft easy.
