All right, I did search pretty thoroughly and am not quite coming up with what I'm looking for.
The 5-speed on my new car, 87 325ic, has an issue. When I shift into second gear, the shift action feels perfect and normal in every regard, but when I let out the clutch, the tranny goes CLONK more often than not. This is only in second gear, and happens when I shift up OR down to that gear, and ONLY when I let the clutch out. It seems to be alleviated SOMETIMES by accelerating briskly uphill and shifting at 4,000RPM or so, and SOMETIMES by double-clutching a downshift. And then it occasionally won't do it at all. In most cases I have to hold the stick back a little or it'll pop out of gear as it grinds.
The shifter has very little slop - it feels good. No gear whine at all in the tranny, though it does have the typical E30 throwout bearing buzz in neutral with the clutch engaged. Clutch is in good shape now that the master cylinder doesn't go 45 degrees off kilter whenever the clutch is stepped on (I just replaced the pedal box yesterday).
On my first E30 several years ago, I tapped an Audi at about 5mph and that caused my engine and tranny to break all 4 mounts (heh) and just sit there, out of alignment. When that happened, second gear would do the same thing.
The mounts on this car are whole, but definitely a little soft - could that be causing this problem? Or am I just looking at shot syncros on 2nd, and I'll finally get a try at installing the spare Getrag I have lying around? I thought bad syncros would cause the grind to appear when actually moving the shifter into the affected gear, but I'm no transmission expert.
Thoughts?
