Auto tranny/horspower loss..

Im curious to know how much horsepower is robbed by the auto tranny. I know its hard to dyno an auto, so it makes me wonder how much horspower is actually lost.

I just got through dynoing(on bosch dyno) my 3.0L w/auto tranny and while the numbers are not bad, the guy said much of the horsepower was taken up by the torque converter.

Anyone have ideas or info on this??

Dynoing an Auto is no harder than dynoing a manual car .
Actually its easier .


And don't get worked up and worry about how much power the auto is taking up ...just worry about what its putting down .
Really , why bother trying to care about what the motor is making , just deal with the numbers coming off the drive wheels .

While I don't think you right about manual and auto dyno numbers.. Im trying to get a comparison on numbers at the wheels btwn both.. In europe they would rather not dyno an auto because of the automatic upshift, keeping it in gear is hard w/o allowing a shift.. So therefore Im looking for comparisons.

I'm still finding it hard to understand why you'd want to know the numbers of a manual car , you should focus on YOUR car and deal with your numbers coming through your auto .

If you were anywhere close to 140-145rwhp then you should be happy .

My car is putting out 220 hp with 230 ft lbs of torque.. I just want to compare with one with a manual tranny.. I might be converting to a manual in the near future,

I think the other guy is just talkin to talk. On older cars it can be a real pain in the ass to get the car to stay in 1 gear, and you obviously want to try more than 1 and you need to run the car in 1 gear, WOT from 2k to redline. rule of thumb is 15% hp loss for a manual and 20-25% for an auto.

Yeah that seems about right, I had a long discussion with my tuner and he said that because of the weight and auto tranny their was some loss of horsepower.. I suppose I should do a tranny swap after all. If someone here is in europe, please help me find a tranny so I can do the swap.. I will probably source out the parts somewhere else..
