hard to get in and out gears

Hi, last night i was driving on the highway as i was exiting i was tryin to down shift into 4th. and it woudln't go in. when i down shfited to 4th it was liek nothing was there. tired 3rd coudn't go in there. the shifter looked like it was in nutral and was very loose and rattling. i was still in 5th. so when i stoped. so i was trying to get it into 1st. still stuk in 5th but look like it was in nutral some kinda way i got it into 3rd. but still loose and wont go into any other gear. so i drove it home in 3rd. today i got it into 1st but still look like it was in nutral. can't get it into any other gears

can anybody tell me what might be the problem?

This could be from worn out shifter bushings. Or if you can shift into all gears with the engine off the cause might be because the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

My first thought was the clutch not disengaging enough to allow you to shift, but from your description, it sounds like the shifter linkage is broken.

yea i found out today. they said i need a whole new shifter and linkage.bushing.

There is no reason to spend a stupid amount of money on that BAV shifter kit.
Goto Pelicanparts.com or anywhere you like and rebuild it with factory parts and pick up a Z3 shifter all for less than $100 and you will be very happy.
