When I was thinking about replacing my M20 I asked the guys at Bavarian Auto works about a replacement engine swap. They had a stroker M20 they had built and didn't use sitting in storage. Don't remember the price but it wasn't out of line. Give them a call at 254 7380, ask for Ray. No affiliation, I use them to do the jobs on my car I don't want to do.

if your budget is $3000, then start looking for an m50 with 5spd attached. you can probably get one complete for ~$1000-1500 with tranny. then with everything else, you will end up around or just over $3K mark.

        M30 > M50

More torque with less effort (revvage), good mileage in E30s (my dad's 3453cc Euro M30 gets over 25mpg in his 3400lb 6 series), and it's by far the cheapest swap I believe.
