325e Auto. Only reverse.

Holler, Im a VW guy that just picked up a decent '84 324e for an even more decent price, the car is currently automatic, will be 5spd swapped soon.

As of now, car starts right up, goes into reverse just fine, but i get nothing in D,3,2,1..........It doesnt try to engage, the idle stays the same as if its in neutral..........
The PO got the car, purchased a junkyard tranny, plopped it in, it still did the same thing, no drive. He gave up, now its my problem.

Any ideas? Help is much appreciated.

Forward clutches are toast .

Get a new clutchpack and rebuild or throw in another used 4hp22 .


EDIT : You're doing a 5-spd swap anyway , so what do you care ?

Same thing happened with my car at about 150K. Lost all forward gears, but was able to drive 10 blocks in reverse to get home (obeying all traffic laws of course).

I bought a used tranny and replaced mine, but it sounds like you've got a better idea.

ive got a Auto trans that i dont need. It came out of my 102k cabrio. Let me know if you are interested(for now). Will be ALOT cheaper than going 5 speed right now.
