    changing my tranny

i have a 6/86 325e. need to change the tranny because first gear sycro is out. i have access to a 5/86 5sp for $250. the guy told me that the gear ratio is different and the output shaft flange is different. will i be able to change the flanges with no huge problems?

and by any chance does anyone know the difference in the gear ratios?

All Getrag 260 transmissions have the same gear ratios. There are variations in shifter mount/type, output flanges, and the provisions for bell housing mounted timing reference sensors, but otherwise they are pretty much interchangeable. The flange isn't difficult to change and you'd probably want to replace the output seal at the same time.

Early cars used a sheet metal shifter that bolted to the rear of the transmission (what i think you may have). Later cars have a different shifter that requires a lug on the top rear of the transmission. That design change does limit what transmission one can use. A peek under you car will tell what shifter you have and thus which transmission will work.

when i was changing the output shaft seal, i just noticed the locations of the shifter and linkage. the linkage, i recall, just went directly to the tranny. i didnt pay too much attention there. but if i needed to, can i get the shifter (linkages, bolts, bushings, etc) off the donor car, could i just swap everything with out major complications?
trying to make this a day project, everything needs to go somewhat smooth

            That should work.
