OK took the 3.25 geared E28 diff to gear shop for OBX install.
They can't get the unit to set up as the available shims don't have the correct thickness to get the contact patch in the middle of the ring gear.
Contacted OBX who said something about the 528e and the 535i diffs being slightly different. I don't know anything about that as all I've been able to find says all E28's use the same diff as the E30's.
OBX said to return the unit for exchange, which I'm glad they said. The only problem is I have to disassemble the whole unit and then have the replacment installed, adding to the bill I already have for the current work.
The gear shop suggested that the shims currently installed can be thinned by .003-.005 on the one side and a .003-.005 shim installed on the other side should solve the problem. I might try to get the shims machined and see if that works before I pull it all apart...
