popping noise when engaging 1st gear

Hi all need opinions/input. When engaging into 1st gear(car is a 5spd) I can hear an audible popping noise. Everthing underneath the car seems fine, the driveshaft, center support guibo don't seem to have any play. The sounds seems to be originating from inside the tranny. Can this be sx of worn out clutch or one that is wearing out? I can also hear a similar noise if I engage into 2nd gear rapidly. If i rev the car up more than usual and engage the clutch into first very gently, I sometimes can avoid hearing it.

    Thoughts?

Could it be coming from the shifter linkage? Can you feel it in the shifter when you put it into first?

Do you get the noise when selecting 1st gear or when you are releasing the clutch?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

        thanks for the reply

to answer some of the questions....don't think its the linkage but how could I check? Pull the shifter boot off and listen I guess. The noise comes on after the clutch is released and specifically when I press the gas pedal to acclerate. Sounds like there is some slippage and then a pop then goes into gear....

As of now, I'm having a new clutch put in, its an 88 with close to 220k miles no records of when clutch was changed so....yes I'm throwing parts at it to see if will help at the moment. After the clutch get installed if it is still there I'll see about getting a reman driveshaft, then after its all said and done maybe its the tranny itself

          update-its at the tranny shop

so I'm getting a new clutch put in as we speak/write but they called and the original estimate will need to be uped by 80 bucks since my car has a dual fly wheel. Its an 88 super eta. I was hoping that it was the single flywheel set up. I don't have the vin to verify but anyone else with a super E know if this is true or not. I'm thinking its a 50/50 since the super E was a hybrid possible that its a dual flywheel with no reference sensors? Anyway I agreed-really had no choice since they have me by the "balls" I droped the car off and they gave me a lift to work and will pick me up when its done later today.

BTW-what does the fly wheel do exactly-mechanically I know of it since I've done the research but please shed some light.

A noise when the drive train is subjected to torque loading could be from the transmission, but it is more likely to be from the transmission/motor mounts, the clutch, or aft of the transmission (driveshaft, diff mount, rear subframe, or half shafts).
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

              thanks jlevie

Agreed on your logic. When I twisted the driveshaft by hand the "looseness" type popping noise was originating from the tranny area-I'm hoping that by replacing the clutch/resurface flywheel will help. Keep your fingers crossed 4 me.

The flywheel is what the clutch mates with. It also help to stabilize idle speed due to it's inertia and affects how quickly the engine will rev/slow down.

I think I have some bad news for you. If you were twisting the driveshaft by hand, you were obviously out of gear.

If you were out of gear, the clutch has nothing to do with it, unless it were a broken spring on the clutch, which should not make a "pop"

                  Keeping the fingers crossed.

Did you tell the clutch shop what was going on?

                    update thanks SRI and NRD

got the car back today and it is great but the noise is still present but much more muted now. The shop did dx as originating from the diff-I really trust this shop. I'm just really pleased with how it shifts now-like buttah, and the pedal is nicen soft.

Looking at my old clutch I only had a few thousand miles to go? Not sure but it was very, very close to the rivets.

I'm going to see if adding the LSD additive to my diff will help things out, also considering topping it off when I get home.

Good news is that a diff should'nt be too hard to replace if it comes down to it!
