Will a ETA 5 spd fit into a I? Are the ratios the same? Also will an early model trans work in a late model car? I didn't know if the shifting arms were interchangeable or not.

    Yes .
All the US M20 trans will work in an "i" car ......just make sure if you get a real early one that it has the ears on top for the shift support and bitch clip to mount.

How early is early? I know my eta was like a 2/86 production date. Are these more desireable?

From what I understand. Most 86's had the newer style tranny. 84-85's did not.

I need to replace the transmission in my 86 eta, does this mean I can use any transmission from an M20 powered E30 and it will bolt up?

Last time I talked to someone trying to buy one the dude was pretty convinced it wouldn't fit...

This would make it a lot easier finding a transmission.

4/86 and earlier transmissions are a little different then the 5/86 and up. if yours is 4/86 and before buy a tranny that was in that production dates, if yours is a post 5/86 then buy one from that time.
