    HELP! Tranny Output flange 30MM nut will not budge

    Hey guys,

    I have done an extensive search on this and all posts say the same thing. Heat+Impact = nut off. Well, I have been torching and hitting it with my brand new 600ft lb Ingersol Rand impact and nothing. This thing is seriously on there. It is interesting because I have torn down and rebuilt most of this car and nothing else has given me a problem. The car is rust and corosion free. I have even tried hitting it with the air chisel. I am thinking my only other option is to cut it off with a wheel or the dremel. I want to get some advice here before I destroy anything. The tranny is still in the car but I have a comfortable ammount of work space in the tunnel.

    the way i did it is i took a piece of wood and made it so i could bolt the wood to the output flange and fit the socket onto the nut and jumped on my breaker bar, quite literally standing on top of the end of the breaker bar hopping up and down, but it was out of the car so i guess this is very little help

      Use a jack handle on a 1/2 breaker bar. Longer the the lever more torque applied.

        Mine had very similar issues... Is yours turning the motor over, is that the problem? Mine was so I had to put the car on 1st gear and have a buddy on the crank nut at front torquing opposite while a breaker bar was used on the output shaft nut. Thats the only way we were able to pull it off and replace the leaky seal.

          Guys,

          Thanks for all of your replies. The output flange is not spining. I put an M10 bolt through one of the holes and am using a large screw driver against the bolt and tunnel to stop rotation. The problem is simply the nut not wanting to break free. The car is on jack stands so lever length is a bit of an issue. I can't really use anything much longer than the 18" 1/2 drive breaker bar that I am using.

          I am thinking about seeing if I can find a place that rents out tools. I want to see if I can rent a super powerful impact wrench. Not sure if such a thing even exists. Any other ideas out there??

          Thanks guys. This is killing me because the car has been on stands for 6+ months. I am almost done with a complete mechanical restoration and I want to drive the car. This bolt is the only thing between me and enjoying 6 months worth of hard work.

            If your going the rental route--get a 3/4 impact or a full one inch impact. Don`t forget to soak with Parts Blaster. Longer the better.

              we used a 48 inch 1/2 braker and a go kart axle for lever. Car was on jackstand also. Had to put it as high as I could on the stands and position the nut so that I got whatever leverage I could. My buddy Joe had the braker and axle to what seemed like almost 6 feet. The car, I swore, lifted from the RH stands before the nut left go. It took a good show of brute force from two people.
              Try someone on frnt torquing against you on the rear. Kinda crazy now that I think about it. We likley put more torque on that crank during that time that what the engine does...

                  Dave,

                  I am using a propane bottle torch and maybe it justr isn't getting hot enough. If I can't get the stupid thing off soon, I am just going to trailer the car to the shop that we have at work and put it on the lift so that I can at least get some extra leverage on it. We also have a cutting torch so maybe I can heat it up quite a bit more.

                  Thanks for all the help guys. I feel better knowing that I am not the only one to struggle with this thing.

                    Definitely get the cutting torch on it. Just don't pull the trigger, and keep heat on it until it glows. Get the impact on it then and make sure it doesnt fall on you once its out since your laying under the car, that would be a hell of a burn.

                      I'd be worried about using the impact on a hot nut. You'll end up stripping the nut since the metal is softer. Let it cool before you hit it with the impact.

                      And I also suggest LOTS of penetrating oil.

                        I wanted to thank everyone that helped. I finally got the nut off. I ended up using a new 750 foot pound Craftsmen Professional Impact with a 6 point socket that I got from sears.com that was intended for a GM axle nut. I had to grind down the exterior of the socket to get it to slide in place. It is funny to me that the Sir tools socket purchased for $40 from Bav Auto is a 12 point design for this kind of torque application. I ended up using the bottle torch for about 10 minutes to heat up the old nut then the combination of lots of torque from the impact and the 6 points worth of solid contact area spun the sucker off like a hot knife through butter. Thanks again for all the help. The car should be back on the road soon after about 6 months worth of mechanical restoration.
