93~96 M3 3-DS ZF Trans in an E-30 M42? Has anyone done it here?

If so what was the physical and psychological damage incurred?

It would be nice to know before I buy 2 cores and make the measurements my self.

Hmm, that's an interesting swap! I am fairly certain the G240 and the ZF have the same bell housing pattern, because the 240 bolts right up to an M5x-family engine. My guess is that the transmission will sit fairly forward, so you might have to get creative with the driveshaft solution.

I do have a 240 in the garage, would it help to get a height measurement or something?

It's a long story... I can tell you that a 240mm clutch and billet 16lb flywheel will fit in a little Getrag (started the job on Thursday morning... Done late Friday afternoon...whatamotherfuckandbloodshed).

I know that the little 240 will blow soon so I need to line up a new option...and if the ZF isn't too much of a hassle I think it's the best bet...Only problem I don't seem to have one around... will it even fit in the tunnel??? Dunno?.

Yeah, it should fit fine. The ZF310 or 320 isn't that big. It fits fine mated to an M50 engine.
