    throughout bearing...frozen

theres a whirring noise co ming from my transmission. it gets really loud when i depress the clutch pedal. i can feel it vibrate through the clutch pedal. i think the throughout bearing is frozen. any remedies for this short of taking it to the mechanic to replace it. i don't think i can get away with replacing just the bearing, i'm sure they'll say "replace the clutch assembly". drats!

The throwout bearing can be replaced independently of the clutch. But since the major port of the cost is removing and replacing the transmission, if the clutch has significant use it would not make sense to just replace the throwout bearing and then be doing the job again shortly to replace the clutch.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
