1984 325e Shrot shifter is different than what's in the car!?

I picked up the z3 1.9 short shifter and bushing kit from KO performance. Went to install it today and the stock part in the car looks different. it has a circlip that holds the lever in on top. Or am I just really dumb and don't get it? I removed the clip underneath, removed the circlip on top and pulled the old lever out. but the new white plastic bushing is bigger in diameter than the circular metal piece thats in the car now. WTF?
Plus the stock lever has a spring on the top of the ball. Do I need a special short shift kit?

    Thanks for your help!

no. kit works just need different plastic bits. you have the early trans kit, they sent you bits for the later cars. i ran into the same issue with my wifes 86 eta.

you have to cut the metal and plastic ring off the old shifter and put them on the new one. dont use the bushings it came with since you cant.

Incorrect. You don't need a metal ring that sits on top of the spring for the old shifter, you'll use a lock-ring.
