about to do my rear wheel bearings with a slide hammer..advice?

I was reading on a few write ups and it looks like I have an idea on what I need to do....

any additional advice before I tackle this job? I'm going to rent a slide hammer. I'll most likely cut the inner race out of the hub.

I'm going to rent a slide hammer...

is there anything else i need to rent? This isn't my first wheel bearing job i've done atleast 12 other wheel bearings but all using a press this is my 1st bmw doing the wheel bearing along with 1st wheel bearing job using a slide hammer.

I've used a slide hammer once before for a honda rotor other than that i'm inexperienced with the tool

It's a bitch. I did both rear wheel bearings on my M3 with a slidehammer, and it took hours of pounding to get them out.

You need to make sure you have the right adapter to get the slidehammer to bolt up to your hub.

Take the trailing arms off and use a press to get them out. I almost ruined a HUGE slide hammer trying to get them off (drug the nut across five threads). I was able to use the slide hammer to get the hubs out, but my bearings wouldn't budge even with a 10lb slide. I even fashioned a thick ass washer that fit perfectly behind the bearing and they still didn't even budge a little at all.

Yeah, Ken's bearing was a huge PITA, we had to break out semi-truck tools (i.e. HUGE) to ge the fucker off, and even then it took serious shadetree skills and hours of blood and sweat. I would recommend using the press.

When I did mine, I used a slidehammer to get the hub off, then used an air hammer to push the bearing out from the back.

              Man up ;)

Took about 10 minutes with the slide hammer to get both bearings out when we did it on my car. The whole job was short of two hours, but we also used air tools.

                Thats exactly what i did.

First one took me 4 hours, (figuring out how to get the hub off and thinking up the idea of using the air hammer)

Did the second side a week later, took me an hour on a hoist.

                +1 for the air hammer.
Just make sure not to damage the trailing arm itself, damage the bearing as much as you want.

Sounds like you're going to use a slide hammer? :D

Last time a did a rear bearing I used big washers and threaded rod to get the new bearing in. Worked great. I used a dremel to cut out the old bearing. It was slow going, but worked well.

I used an air hammer from the back side, popped them out in about 1 min. It tool longer to get the snap ring out.

I made a rear wheel bearing press out of a peice of 3/8 rod (threaded) , some thick washers and a 3inch steel pipe cap , a 2 1/2 inch steel pipe cap , and a couple 3/8nuts . cost about nine bucks , worked great , still have it too , pressed them out and pressed them back in.
