I just bought a new (to me) 89 325i a couple of weeks ago. I have since been reading these boards every night trying to learn about the car.
I found the thread about identifying differentials and reading the tag. Ok, by reading the tag, I have a 3.73 open differential. There is no "S" on the tag.
But, while working on the brakes tonight, I discovered that turning one rear hub turns the other. I set the old pad sensor on one rear hub after removing the caliper. Then, while working on the other side, I rotated that hub and the sensor on the other side fell to the ground. I tested it again, and sure enough, rotating one hub rotates the other. I can't see it, I can only test by setting stuff on the hub and watching it fall.
Is this an LSD? Or do the open diffs have enough friction to rotate the opposite hub with no tires mounted?
