Is this a speed sensor problem?

So it seems my car runs like a dog in really hot weather, the electronics always seem to go haywire.

Under DECELERATION the speedometer starts bouncing up and down and fluctuating in speed (when I'm actually slowing down constantly). It can't seem to read the speed that I am going when I am slowing down.

However under acceleration it is perfectly fine and reads the correct speed and does not bounce up and down.

If I am slowing down with neutral engaged, the speedometer works fine and the needle moves down like it normally should. Only when a gear is selected and I'm slowing down is the needle all screwed up.

This has in turn screwed up my cruise control, but I believe if I fix the source of the problem the cruise will be be fine again.

Any suggestions on what the culprit of this is? I was thinking maybe it could be the speed sensor in the differential...the wiring starting to fry or something? Judging from pics I don't think mine has a rubber grommet over it to protect the sensor, it is just exposed when connected to the diff.

If this isn't it, I would be appreciative of any suggestions of what it may be.

I would just pull the speed sensor and clean the sensor and wiring, reinstall and see if the problem continues. It's very easy to take off it's only 2 bolts.

Dunno if you fixed this or not, but I had a similar problem in my E30, except that most of the time my speedo didn't work at all. Once in a while it would just start working then eventually stop. I replaced the speed sensor and it did nothing.

I think I need a new gauge cluster.

lol I need a cluster in both cars...but I don't care at the moment.

The only thing wrong with the E36 gauges is the fuel readout....it bounces around or just wont read alot of the time. I just go by how many miles are on the tank and I am good.
