What signs did your clutch give before its death?

I took a trip this weekend that included a 1hr+ crawl on the George Washington Bridge going into NYC. During a particular section of slight incline, I was working the clutch quite a bit. It was about 90 degrees outside, and the coolant temps (read: everything temps) were higher than normal. During this period, I was getting quite a bit of chatter when engaging first gear, something I have not felt before in this car. Later on after things cooled down a bit, everything is as normal; nice smooth takeup rolling off a stop in first. For all I know, it could be the original clutch with almost 150k; I don't see a replacement in the P.O.'s records.

When the clutch on two of my Civics died, it was a slow, slippery death. Our Volvo 740 we had growing up simply went one day, with no signs at all. Just wondering what to expect out of an e30... TIA.

Chatter is a common symptom of a dieing BMW clutch...

Also hard shifts and slipping....They sometimes just blow apart too.

Will it start during a really hot spell like my sitatuation? Because it is seriously 100% normal now. Thanks for the input, Zenmaster.

The situation that existed when the clutch began chattering is pretty much of a worst case condition. You may have overheated the clutch disk. If the clutch isn't slipping and isn't chattering now it probably is okay, at least for a while. 150k, if that is what the clutch has on it, is pretty high mileage for an E30 clutch and it may not last all that much longer. The usual precursors to a clutch failure is slippage or a difficulty in engaging 1st or reverse from a stop.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yes High temperature will agravate it because it cant disapate the heat.
They chatter because the friction material is glazed and starts grabbing.
