RPM-specific noise and other weird stuff

So I have a sneaking suspicion that my transmission may have something wrong with it. For as long as I've owned the car, it has made a loud ringing/clanking noise at precisely 1500 RPM under load. No noise in neutral, but under acceleration in every other gear, the noise is there. If I stay at 1500, the noise does not go away. Any guesses as to what this could be?

Also, it's always been difficult to get into second gear. AFAIK, all the e30 gears have syncros... could this be a sign that my 2nd gear syncros are going bad? It's difficult to describe, but there is a delay between me trying to put the shifter into 2nd and the shifter finally moving into position that's about three times as long as any other gear. I don't like to force it in, because every other gear slides in smoothly.

    Suggestions?

A noise that occurs at 1500rpm in every gear would make me think of a problem forward of the transmission. You might to run the while it is up on a lift to find the source of the noise.

The 2nd gear syncros could be worn. You might get a bit more life out of the transmission by a fluid change, say to Redline MTL.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
