    Whining noise.

Im hearing a whining noise as i accelerate in 2nd and 3rd gear. I fear this is the differential about to go, but im unsure. Opinions on this and suggestions as to a possible replacement lsd (gear ratios that is) i could just go stock, but im curious about alternatives. ive got 223k on my 87 325is.

The whine could be from the differential, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is "about to go". A fluid change (I like Redline 75w90 for this diff) may help reduce the noise, which is probably from slight wear in the ring and pinion. A differential can run a really long time after it starts to whine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
