    SOS: testing clutch slave cylinder

alright guys, im trying to troubleshoot my failed clutch system. im on campus right now, and i forgot my bentley at home... but i have the slave cylinder out right now (getting weird looks in the parking lot) and i dont know how to test it... the piston seems to have a LOT of play, both side to side and in and out. i dont know what a good one is supposed to be like, but at least mine is bone dry and not leaking...

also, when i stick my pinky in the tranny (where the slave piston pushes) something is loose and i can wiggle it a little bit. is that normal?

background info: car stalled in gear on the freeway because my megasquirt came unplugged. then no clutch.

The piston on a the slave cylinder is supposed to have a little play side to side. When you stick your pinky in the trans, you're hitting the clutch release arm. That, too, can wiggle a little bit as there is some play with the release bearing and the arm.

You likely have air in the system somewhere. Might be the brake master cylinder - check that as well. If you are able to take out the slave, you should have room to bleed the system, BUT you must put the slave back in prior to bleeding as you will damage it.

our clutches are self bleeding, and air wouldnt have gotten in the system so fast. i dont believe it was a coincidence that something blew when my car stalled, but i just ordered a new master, so hopefully that'll fix everything. thanks

Hmm....Isn't that the reason there is a bleeder on the slave?

FYI, similar thing happened to my car driving to work. Pedal just went to the floor and never came back up. I believe it was replacing the master that fixed everything.

Good luck. Hope it fixes it.

The master cylinder is self bleeding, but not the slave.
