Differential problem after seal change - HELP!

Ok so i changed out both flange seals and the driveshaft seal as well as a new gasket, and a few various other things. The Diff was spinning freely before i did this.

I go to reassemble it and get everything finger tight, all seems good. I tighten down the passenger side flange and it still spins freely. I tighten down the driver side flange and it wont budge. I lossen the bolts and it spins again. Checked the bearing and it spins great, reseated the flange several times. Im at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My landlord is getting pissed at me for having the car on jackstands for 2 weekends now.

You changed the pinion seal? (input shaft)

I'm afraid I have bad news for you...

You can't just do that because there is a crush sleeve (one shot deal) that sets the pre-load on the pinion bearings...and in turn sets the mesh (depth) on the ring and pinion gears.

It's possible there is something else goin on but...

Sounds like the cover is hitting the diff internals.

Check your clearances between cover and internals with some plumbers putty or clay.

      Hope this helps.

Edit: Sorry I mis read some. I thought you were talking about the cover.

ok got it figured out after i took the thing apart again. Apparently the left and right flanges were being picky about which side they were on. I swaped them bolted it down and they spun perfectly. I know they are the same part number, but maybe they had different wear levels over 20 years. So, my advice to anyone changing the seals is to mark each side :)
