4hp22 in an e28 same as in an e30?

As the title asks. Does anyone know?

Are they the same? Different output flanges? Totally incompatible?

the e28m20 (528e,525i) 4h22s are the same as an e30m20, but the e28m30 (533i,535i) have a different bellhousing. that being said, iirc, m30 4hp22s are the same internaly. You could probably use one if you swapped the bellhousing from an m20 e28/e30. maybe the output shaft too, but I'm not sure.

also, some 4hp22s had an electonic shift program. The valve bodies are different on these, but they are interchangeable. Or, you could use the fancier electronic shift settup on an e30, with some work I'm sure.

Dave: just realized that this was for the 528e you got for your son.

      I'm 95% sure that an e30 4hp22 will work
