    knocking noise on shutdown

not an e30, but just the same......

i have an 88 528e (m20b27), 5sp manual, with about 175k miles on it. everytime i shut the car off it makes a knocking noise just as it comes to a stop. i had the car on a lift recently and had my buddy start and shut off the engine a couple times, and from underneath, it seems to be coming from the transmission. it sounds like rod knock, but what in the trans would make that noise?

i'm pretty sure its the input shaft bearing, what do ya'll think?

it only makes the noise on shutdown, never any other time. and if i have the clutch disengaged, the noise is not as loud, or doesn't occur at all.

The cause could be bad motor or transmission mounts or loose exhaust.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

motor and tranny mounts are new, as is the exhaust, thats why it was on the lift. while i had it up, i decided to check the on the knocking sound, to see if it was coming from the oil pan (rod knock), or from the tranny case.

driving to work this morning in stop and go traffic, i noticed a vibration coming through the shifter, and a whining noise that increased with rpm, but not speed. so its something on the front end of the transmission.

i'm still thinking input shaft bearing.

I wish I had some useful input on this. I am starting to get a slight rattle on shutdown too. Hopefully you get some useful answers "up in here"

My "knocking noise" got WAY worse all of a sudden.

I jacked the damn thing up to find a broken cat heat shield...screwed that bitch back together and all is quiet now.

There is a TSB for e30's for that noise. It should be coming from the dual mass flywheel. They recommend that when you change you clutch that you convert to a single. When you turn off the car, try pressing your foot all the way down on the clutch, and say have it in first.

when i turn it off with the clutch down/in, it doesn't make the noise, but if i just turn it off, without pressing the clutch down, it rattles.

so this could be the flywheel? doesn't matter, the car is due for a clutch anyhow. i have a single mass flywheel laying here, do they use the same clutch?, or is there a specific clutch for each type?

if i upgrade the clutch, what brand do you guys recommend? (links and prices are great)
