    Tranny leak

So I recently became aware of a leak in one of my tranny seals, i believe its between the drive shaft and the transmission...

anyway, the shop i went to (Binghamton Metro Garage) said that i would have to go to the dealership to get the seal replaced, and im not looking forward to discovering what the price of that type of service would be.

My other option is to get a new tranny (well, a used one at least) that has good seals in it already. Basically im looking for some input on which would be the best option price-wise.

oh, and there was about half a litre of oil in there when it was checked out, and the whine which I originally thought had been comming from my differential was actually due to the gear damage the leak eventually caused. its most prominent in 1st and second gear, but it doesent disappear completely untill i shift to 5th.

Any input is appreciated, im trying to tune up the bimmer after the long winter to prepare for summer driving.

Did the whine disappear once you topped up the transmission lube? If so, just replace the seal. If not plan on replacing the transmission (and you should replace the seals in that transmission before installing it in the car). There's nothing particularly magic about replacing the rear main seal or the shifter seal, both of which can be replaced without removing the transmission. I think you need to find a more capable shop if they think this is a dealer only job.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      ^^^^^^
      what he said.

its not that hard of a job at all. if that shop cant do it then find another shop. its maybe 2 hours tops as far as labor and the seal itself isnt very expensive either. find your own part online or at the dealer and find a shop to do it for you. like the previous post said, if the grinding stopped after the addition of oil then just replace the seal. if the grinding is still there, replace the tranny and if you go this route, replace all seal and linkage before reinstalling the tranny.
