    Transmission Swap Help

I am in the middle of swapping out the auto transmission for a manual and have run into a couple of problems.

    1. I finally got everything put back into the car and bled the clutch. After the first couple of pumps the clutch pedal became rock hard after the first 2 or 3 inches of travel. It will go through its normal travel if the bleeder screw is open put as soon as the system is closed up it becomes rock hard. Searching through old posts seem to indicate that it is installed incorrectly. What would cause it to bind like that? Is there an easy way to test things without pulling the transmission again?

    2. After running into the first problem I decided to press on and see if I could at least get the engine to turn over. When I turn the key, I can hear the starter spin but nothing happens. It doesn't seem to contact the flywheel at all. Searching seems to point to the solenoid, wiring or somehow it is the wrong starter for the flywheel. The engine is grounded and I am reasonably sure the rest of the wiring is correct but I am not positive.

Are there any other things to check before I pull everything again? I am sure there are many obvious things that I am missing. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks,
    andy

While it is possible for the starter to have failed coincidental with the transmission swap, the behavior of the clutch and the starter problem strongly suggests a error in assembly of the flywheel clutch, etc. I think you'll have to pull the transmission to determine what is wrong.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Is there anything that jumps to mind as to what would cause these issues? I thought that I had assembled everything correctly but obviously not. Unfortunately there was a period of several months between assembly and when I actually got everything back into the car and my memory is a little fuzzy on how everything went together and what parts were used for sure...

If I put a clutch kit for a 91 but used an 87 or 88 flywheel, would that cause problems? I was thinking that they were all the same but I am not sure now.

      Thanks again for the help!

I don't think there is a problem with that combination of flywheel and clutch. Nor is it immediately obvious what you might have done wrong to cause this combination of faults. I think you are just going to have to get the transmission out and see.

All right thanks for the help. I guess it's time to get the engine hoist out again...

When I figure out what is wrong I'll try to post it up to complete the thread.

          thanks,

Well I finally had time to pull the transmission and take a look. Stupid me, I put the throw out bearing in backwards. I swapped it around and also found a wiring problem with the starter. Slapped it back together and everything works together nicely now.

So the moral of the story is if you are a noob and have a lot of binding in the clutch pedal, think about how you put the TO bearing in...
