    Transmission won't go into gear

I have a 1987 e28 with a m20. I purchased the car with a bad transmission. I swapped in a transmission from the junk yard (G260) and reused all the linkage and such off the old transmission. I decided to reuse the old clutch and throw out bearing because the clutch looked to have 80% life left. After installing the new to me transmission into the car I couldn't get it to go into gear with the car running or not. I thought that I must have a bad slave cylinder from what I had read. I replaced the slave cylinder and still couldn't get the car to go into gear.

Today I remove that transmission and spun it with my drill. It spins great and is quiet. It shifts into every gear now that its out of the car. I did notice there is quite a bit of grease on the throw out bearing surface that mates with the pressure plate, and this piece also looks like its come out from the rest of the throw out bearing a bit.

At this point I'm a little miffed. Do I have an issue with the shift linkage? Do I have a bad throw out bearing? Do I have a bad master cylinder? Bad transmission? I don't want to just throw parts at this transmission if that issue is the transmission itself. Any advice would be appreciated!

Never dealt with that one, but if it shifts by hand out of the car I'd think that would mean that the trans itself is good. If it fails to shift while in the car with the engine off it should be a linkage issue, if it fails when running it should be a clutch system issue.

I think you're right. I talked to a acquaintance who is a BMW master tech and he said he thought it was a clutch issue. I'm going to replace the clutch and see what happens!
