Hi folks
I'm going to be swapping my 5HP24 (which is dying of death) for a 6HP32 in my E28. The engine side of things is pretty well set of now, so I'm going to be focusing on the transmission. Kind of like suspension it's a much overlooked component, but in my opinion it can really make or break the drivability. A V8 (like the M60 and M62) need the 6HP32, a 4/6 cylinder needs the 6HP26 (different bellhousing bolt pattern).

Subjective goals:
Buttery smooth shifts when cruising around (which I do a lot)
Decisive shifts when drag racing (on the street usually; so no super firm shifts that break traction)
Capacity to hold like 800nm (~590ft-lb)
Stay cool when hauling way to much stuff around (towing stuff) or when road tripping through southern Europe (and possibly the US in 2021)
Couple of other things I can't think of right now

So I got a gearbox from a wrecking yard foor 500 euros but controlling it is going to be a challenge. There's currently nothing on the market to either flash the internal TCU (transmission control unit) or to replace it with an external stand alone controller. I send a couple emails to HTG but they never responded, but their solution doesn't feature any self learning (it needs a complete manual tune including how the overlap and handoff between clutches work) so I didn't like it anyway. I got in touch with USshift who have a solution for the 6R80, which is a Ford transmission but it's basically the 6HP26 with a Ford badge (licensed from ZF). After sending lots of information back and forth, they're going to support adapting their controller to the 6HP trans.
Since there is basically no information regarding 6HP swaps online, I'll document my journey here. I really like the 6HP (and 8HP) gearbox series so I also see this as like a promotional action for more automatic swaps :D
