    This.

Exactly what I was going to do. Also gonna do the WP, T-stat, spark plugs, etc. Needs new valve cover gaskets too, so I'll get to peek at the top end a little.

It's still sitting in the back of the truck (with a camper top on it).

    I have no space!

      Update.

Decided to tear the top end off the engine. VCGs needed replacing anyways, so I figured I'd use my boring Sunday afternoon to check out the valve train.

Pics on 2nd post. (Where I'll be documenting the engine refresh)

The "top end" of an engine is the cylinder heads. Crank, rods, pistons, block is the "bottom end". Are you going to remove the heads? Also ive heard this refresh term a few times now, what does it mean? Should be a lot of fun when you are done!

Possibly going to remove the heads. The HG looks like it is seeping some oil at the back of the engine. I use the term "top end" loosely to refer to everything from the bottom of the heads up. Since the VCG, etc is on top of the heads, they fall into that category.

I consider a "refresh" to be VCG, plugs, etc. I'd say rebuild if I was going to do a valve job with seals, etc, which won't happen unless I do remove the heads, and that is not something I think I am going to do.

I know, I've debated getting ahold of you several times about it for my swap, since you and I are neighbors and all...

What a steal! I say while you have it out look for a 6 speed. You are cramming a v8 in an E30, go all the way with the 6 speed.

Yep, it's almost a requirement when you do a water pump anyway (pump will come with 2 new o-rings, you'll need two more for the back side of the pipes).

Just got the brake booster and related parts for relocation to the front fender.

Also picked up a 404 ECU. It's good to have friends who work at the dealer and get stuff from blown up cars cheap.

Also, he's got one side of the e39 exhaust I'll need, from one that blew a HG.

Probably gonna go 6 speed. Got talked into it by my friend. He did a M60/6sp in an e28, and is doing a M70/6sp into an e28 now.

I think he just does them to do them at this point. There are rumors of snails making their way beside the M70....

So....in other news, yesterday I picked up an e39 M5 single mass, lightweight flywheel from a friend. Needs a new friction surface and I have to figure out who manufactured it (UUC, JB Racing, etc....) to see about getting a new surface put on.

                            Any ideas?

Also got a set of e39 540 exhaust manifolds.

Starting to come together. List of parts I need is down to:
                            -Clutch (E39 M5)
                            -Motor mounts
                            -Transmission ($$)
                            -Shitload of fab work
                            -Bits and pieces, gaskets, etc.

Found out the Turner chip in the 484 ECU doesn't delete the EWS, and won't work with the 404 ECU, so that's pretty much useless.

The UUC one will have "only use 850csi clutch components" or something like that etched into. If it uses a V12 clutch/ PP the friction surface diameter is 280mm.... the E39 540/ M5 is 240mm.

There are absolutely no markings on it except at about the 4 o'clock (in picture) where it has a "BII 5575" etched into it. It may be "BH 5575" but I don't have it in front of me right now.

Took the friction surface off and there is nothing etched in the FW or back of the friction surface. I'll measure it after work today. AFAIK it's straight E39 M5 components.
