    temp gauge

Ok so I want to get my temperature gauge to work correctly since my mechanic replaced the previous m60 but didn't take across the e30's temp gauge sensor switch.
This much I know because I was told yesterday that this is why my gauge appears not to be moving much at all.
My question is where is the sensor located in the engine bay?

is it part no. 8 or 10 here :
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...45&hg=11&fg=35
    or somewhere else?

Also, is it literally a case of just buying a temp sensor switch for an e30?

    Thanks

Once you put the e30 sensor in, you need to rewire the plug so the wires are on the opposite sides. The e30 sensor only has 1 prong on it and it's on the opposite side as the V8's

I don't remember exactly, and I'm nowhere near my car to check. If you have the C101 wiring done, stick a paperclip in the sensors plug and put it to ground. Whichever pin makes the temp gage max out is the correct sensor.

Ok so this has taken a new twist. I've bought 2 temp sensors from 2 different auto stores and neither of them fit. Both are a size too small. I was pointed in the direction of the e30 temp sensors from the thermostat housing :
          http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...59&hg=11&fg=35
Problem is that as if you compare with the link in my first post then you see that the nut size of the sensor on the v8 engine is an m14x1,5 whereas the size on the 6 pot is an m12x1,5.
Can anybody confirm where on the e30 they got their temp sensor from if not the thermostat housing.

          Thanks

Has nobody with this conversion has had to get around the temp gauge problem then?

Mine is from a 318is and it fit right it. Note sure of the thread size though, sorry. I tried looking the part up on realoem but couldn't find it.

Finally. Had to go to a scrappy/breakers yard and the guy there new exactly which e30 part it was. Had one on the shelf. It's in and the temp gauge is working. For some strange reason though my idle speed had now shot up to 1500rpm. The only thing that changed was that my mechanic pulled out the sensor for to the ecu instead of the sensor for the dash gauge then when the gauge still didn't work he just swapped the connectors over instead of putting back the ecu sensor back and swapping out the gauge sensor. I don't know if the two sensors are exactly the same or if they differ in some way but i'll get him to put back the sensor he took out and swap the e30 one with the other one he left in....... Just read that all and it might lose you but I know what I mean.

                Thanks to all who've contributed.

And just to confirm, high idling problem now resolved too. It was exactly as I'd thought.
