If you find a NV M6X, the rest of the swap is pretty well documented, which gives you a much higher likelihood of completing it, since any questions/problems will already have been seen and solved. That, in a nutshell, is the answer to your original question of why OBDI...

OBDII is not much more benefit for much more work. Yes, slightly more power as confirmed through dyno tests, but way more unnecessarily complicated .....and not much more wow factor.
Just think....you think you have it all set up and installed correctly...turn the key ....and it doesn't start. Do u think you could diagnose the numerous reasons why that is? At least with OBDI, you have: fuel, ecu power...just about it. No need to see if your complicated sub-systems are working properly and feeding the ECU the proper information for the thing to turn over.Recent Rebranding!!

You can very well easily get a code scanner and the much smarter ECU will tell you the exact reason why your car is not starting.
With the ECU reflash you get rid of the two O2 sensors, EGR, and air pump.
Again I'm talking about the M62B44 Non-TU....Not going to mess with an M62B44TU with pedal computer etc.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+

M62 and M62TU done many times in E30, no big deal.
Just make sure you have a friend who can program all the unnecessary things off the ECU or alternatively have all the EWS things from the donor at hand.

Not all M62's use cable, plenty of them with fly-by-wire around, at least here in Europe...- E34 M5 (x 2) -
