    E30 - 2003 M62B44 conversion help.

    Hey guys..

    I've managed to locate a M62B44 engine from a 2003 X5..

I have some questions regarding the gearbox, what are my options here (manual) as I'm having trouble locating a stock M62 manual gearbox here in aus, so the question is do you know of any earlier model gearboxes that would fit?

Please don't post "google it" or "research it" I've done some digging around already and haven't found much help on the topic..

If you have the knowlege please share, any input is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Is there such a thing as an S62B44? I thought S62s were all 5 liter. Also, did X5s come with S62s?

Also, I'm gonna go ahead and say "search", since it really is very very easy to find out what transmissions work on the M60/M62/S62 motors.

To answer your question, your only options are the 6-speed from an E39 V8 car, the 6-speed from an E34 540i or the 5-speed from the E34 530i, or in rare cases, the 6-speed from the E31 840i, if they even came with them...

Transmission choice depends on what engine management you're using.

Transmissions from OBDI vehicles ('95 and older) won't work with the M62 DME because they don't have the boss for the crank sensor on the bellhousing.

If you're going to do a VANOS delete and use the OBDI DME (and the M60 front-mounted trigger wheel), then you can use any transmission.

If you're going to keep the M62 DME, then the E39 540i/M5 transmission is the only one you can use.

I don't think they ever did... I think only the M70 was available with a 6 speed.... but that may be just the US market.

Actually, euro 840's could be had in 6 speed spec, and that makes for a mouth watering potential swap to S62 if you had such a car.

Looks like both M60 and M62 versions.

Now.... How many we're made? That is another question.

Not sure how easy to answer. Quick looks on eBay de and uk negative

Big difference actually, in accessories and electronics (water cooled alternator, electronic tstat, electronic tb) etc etc.

in very very rare cases, the 6-speed (I think?) out of the E38. Yes, I was quite surprised when I found out some E38s were manual (Euro only, of course)

Also, def go OBD1. Find an M60B40 and slap the M62 block/rotating assembly in, keep B40 everything else.

I seem to recall some early 4.4 M62's had air cooled alternators

X5 4.6 run obd-1 FTW if you can find it. Alpina's B8 engine for the most part.

Locally I recall someone (Leo Franchi) building a 7 with manual gearbox and S38. Nice car. Interesting trivia that some of the 7's came V8 manual. Were they 5 or 6 speeds?

                      (too lazy to look)

                        pretty sure all m62s were obd2 after 96 ...
