My M30B35 manual swap gets around 14L/100 in city driving - 20mpg (UK).
The way I look at it, my e30 cost me buttons vs. the depreciation & servicing costs on my wife's new car, so the fuel economy is largely irrelevant. Her car gets around 7.5L/100 city, yet my car still works out substantially cheaper across a year - and my car gives me more grins! :)

Still, if you're worried about economy, a BMW diesel probably gives you best balance of performance vs. mpg. An M51 from a 525tds would give you slightly more performance than an M20B25, and around 43mpg on the motorway. The more modern diesels would obviously be better again, but with much more complexity in the swap.

Somebody has got the diesel one of these babies. That could get you some good fuel economy.
