V8 wont start...

    V8 wont start...

    Hello Guys.

    Its been awhile since I have visited this forum. I need some advice from the experts. I have a s62 on a e30 m3. And finally I am at the stage with the swap of starting the engine. But the engine I bought has been sitting around for 2 years or so and Engine wont start. I only have compression on one side. No compression on the other. When I try to start the engine, oil is being squirted from the throttle. We tried to jump start but that didnt work. It seems like the rings and/or valves could be stuck on that side?
    Anybody has some advice?

      Was your engine upside down on the stand for a long period of time?
      How do the plugs look?
      Do you have the crank sensor on the transmission bell housing hooked up?

      Are you getting spark?

        uh jean....what i meant with jump start..is that we pushed the car on the street to try and get it started, but that didnt work. everything else I stated makes sense.....

          I would recommend taking it apart.

          You don't have any compression on any cylinder on the entire side?
          Was it laying on its side or upside down?

            Dark Side:

            Nope the engine was not upside down for a long period. It was standing upright for 2 years.


            The 4 spark plugs that or on the side with no compression are covered in oil.

            Yes the crank sensor is hooked up.

            And we do have spark.

            I am being told by my mechanics that engines made with aluminum blocks tend to have the rings and valves stuck.....

              no compression on that side....not laying upside down...

              Could this be happening if the camshaft bolt (exhaust side) are broken?

                Clearly something is catastrophically wrong with your motor if you have no compression on one half of the motor and the throttle body is squirting oil everywhere.

                Tear it back apart and find out what it is.

                  if every single cylinder has oil all over the plugs you have catastrophy on your hands. Cracked block, extremely blown head gasket, bent valves due to timing issue... If your exhaust cam broke in anyway it may have bent all those valves cracking or dropping the guides. this is the only thing I could imagine placing oil on all the plugs on one side. Take that head off and take pics.

                    well...apparently my vanos unit on the passenger side is fucked. camshaft is fine.
                    I hope this is the culprit. But where can i Get a used but in good condition vanos unit for this engine????

                      eBay ? local bmw shops?

                      You never know what you get with a "used" part, I would pay the extra and buy it new if you plan on keeping the car/swap for a long time.

                        A fucked vanos will not cause lack of compression or oil in the cylinders. It will fully retard that cam. There's something else wrong here. I'm assuming your vanos was victim to the accident as well.

                          Well it was not only a bad vanos. But one of the gears was missing from the vanos unit. So offcourse the camshaft that is linked with that gear did not function. What do you think?

                            that is true. I bought this used engine from a junker, Which was sold to be in "great" condition. And everything else besides this vanos unit looks to be in pretty good shape. I think that the guy I bought the engine from switched the vanos before I picked up the engine....Anyways, a new vanos unit is over $2500. Thats a lot of money.......AHH!!

                              Look for a used one and rebuild it.

                              The valves under that cam are trash. The head needs to come off. I'm guessing the valve seals/guides are toast too.
