I'm looking to run with an M62B44 as built.
The M60 had the CPS on the crankshaft pulley up front in a 60-2 arrangement.
The M62 used a flywheel mounted ring (also 60-2).
I will be running with the M60 DME (running M62 map) using an M60 CPS (because the connector needs to be same) on an extended lead to reach the back of the motor.
I think it will work. I understand that the two ways the CPS is used is to verify RPM at the crank and in some cases to advance the timing etc. I also understand that often times the camshaft position sensor is used to achieve this. In a third scenario, the two sensors together are used to check one another (in other words they must provide similar inputs to the DME within a few microseconds for the DME to be "happy".)
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Does anyone have the confirmed functions of the CPS as in what is its role on the M60/M62? Is it just to count RPMs or is it for timing advance?
What's the worst that happens if I don't have perfect placement on my CPS? From what I've read it will make startup difficult at best or impossible at worst. Will it cause violent/harmful idling or anything that could possibly damage the motor?
I would opt for swapping the M60 lower timing case and crank pulley onto my M62 if sealing the lower case would not be a problem. I understand BMW changed the gasket from a "paper gasket" to a rubber membrane for the M62 and as such, I'd rather not have issues with oil here.
