So apparently I really don't understand BMW engine codes, it had an M20 in it. At least it isn't as bad as taking an M60 out.

Well, M20 was M60 until the current M60 stole it's name at least.

I'd go M60 too. Complete engines are very cheap because of the niche market, certainly no cheaper way into a lightweight aluminum V8. It will have to stay mostly stock because of the price of mods, but that's still 260-270 whp which is right about where a stripped track E30 should be stopping anyway. Very understressed at this power too.

You can also use a 5 speed from an E36, very cheap for how good it is. Then you can basically use the back of an eta (driveshaft, diff) and it really comes together nicely.

Be very very careful with any sort of aggressive driving with a 302 and the typical modified front pan.

5 speed from an E34 530i. The E36 unit has the same guts, but the wrong bellhousing.

I should've mentioned only with the TTV special flywheels they work.

I'm pretty much set on the 302 just for the price and abundance of parts.

Is that because of oil starvation?

They don't, Ttv has that wrong. What flywheel you run has no impact on the fact only one bellhousing fits the m60. You do run a e36 clutch with that setup however.
