    Make sure your auxiliary fan is blowing the right way

    Maybe by documenting my fail someone else can avoid a similar problem. When installing aftermarket auxiliary fans, they can be installed as pushers or pullers. Mine came as a puller. I read the instructions which documented reversing the blades to push AND reverse the wiring. I missed the wiring instruction.

    Roughly 3 years ago I completely overhauled the AC system which included the installation of a new auxiliary fan. I bypassed the resistor so the fan came on high when the AC was running.

    The AC was never really cold, and when I stopped, I lost any gain in the temperature reduction. AC pressures were very high at idle and only slightly better at 1500 rpm. I struggled as my stubborn self was determined to figure it out. I would take a run at it once or twice a summer, get frustrated, give up, do some additional research and take another run at it.

    Recently, I had left the AC button depressed and as I turn the key on to roll down the window I heard the fan running and the thought hit me that was the only thing I had not verified! Sure enough the auxiliary fan was pulling out and of course the engine fan was pulling in! So, of course at a stop, no air was moving across the condenser! It’s a wonder the car didn’t overheat at stop lights! And, at speed, I was getting only a small portion of what was needed to cool the condenser. Reversing the wiring so the auxiliary fan was pushing correctly and all is well. Pressures are correct and AC vent temperatures are 47 degrees!

    Self-inflicted wounds are the worse, and verifying your own work is always difficult. Hopefully, someone else will avoid a similar problem with this post!
