    hey guys got a problem

i hear a droning as though i have 4x4 tires on my car. i know it's not the powertrain, due to the fact that when i pop in the clutch the sound does not go away. this leaves me to believe it's the tires themselves. what could it be? unbalanced? or what?

    I'm guessing wheel bearings.

i thought wheel bearings make a squeak or a grinding sound? this sounds like i have bad ass tread on my tires.

My wheel bearings sounded like mud boggers.

Is the noise from the front or the rear? Does it change when you turn a certain direction versus driving straight?

You need the d.side wheel bearing. I just replaced both of mine a month or so ago when my p.side went bad. Try have it replaced asap...this is a good time to do brakes if you're running close...

It's not that hard...order a pair of hubs from BMA autoparts or your favorite parts supplier and get wrenching..I think the Bentley details this..only prob with mine was a stuck race, a puller helped get it off.

There are articles on the net on how to do this..check www.bmwe30.net or google this topic.

                Good luck

Driver side? if he is turning right and it shuts up ,it is the passenger side. that needs to be replaced.

when the wheel has load on it, it will drone with a bad wheel bearing.. IE turn left, DRONE = Bad passenger side. casue the load is on the pasenger side when You are turing that way.

Turn right = Drone then its the drivers side.

                  replace the passenger..

My bad...my memory is not too good at remembering which direction of the wheel being turned would silence the noise a little. I did both and the p.side was visibly the fubar one...its best to do this in one shot imho.. oh yeah new lock nuts, cover cap and a breaker bar come to memory as the other items ordered and needed.

haha, you guys almost had me confused there for a minute, but i will plan on doing all 4 of them. if i start a project it's done properly. (if two are going, then the other two cant be that far off).

The fronts are easy to do. I did mine not to long ago and did the brakes at the same time. However, I wish you lots of luck with the rears. Having helped do the rear wheel bearings on an e30 m3 I must say its a pain in the ass!

thanks for the heads up. i will definately keep that in mind, however, pain in the ass jobs seem to flock to me (must be murphy's law), so it's won't be a big problem.
