    odd car troubles

So I have a 84 318i and it runs great but for some reason occasionally it will start running like shit. When it does this it runs real rich and puts out a lot of black smoke. The speedometer and all the other gauges quit working and it just runs super rough. I have a feeling it has something to do with an exposed ground somewhere that is causing that or possibly a messed up wire maybe in the dash. But I wanted to get some other peoples opinions and see what they think. well........?

what is the voltage testing of your battery? If your battery is going bad or the alternator is not charging the battery your car will do crazy stuff on low voltage. When I say low voltage I am talking lower than 12.5v. A good battery will test at 13+ volts after sitting for a day.

battery is fine. voltage is at 14.2. every time it starts running rough I disconnect the ICV and it jumps. Then plug it back in and its fine. Idles high but runs fine. ICV replacement is next. doing it today

I believe there is a temp sensor that tells the cold start injector to put extra fuel into the system. If that is not in spec it can cause wierd problems too. You also might want to check out the crank sensor as that could be going and when it shorts out the ECU will not get the right info to run properly. Now that I think about it I bet that is where your issue is. Keep us updated on your progress!

I had a very similar issue (minus the smoke) after periods of highway driving and it was a dying AFM. Next time it starts happening, give the top of the AFM a quick tap with your knuckle and see if it suddenly gets better. I swapped it out and haven't had any problems since.

so we changed the afm and it seemed to run a little smoother and the dying issue was resolved. The sensors are next. Beginning with the crank sensor then the throttle positioning sensor. The car doesn't seem to want to accelerate at low rpms. It is super choppy at low rpms. When it idles at 7 or 800 rpms the dome lights dim and it is a super choppy idle.

There is no crank sensor on the 84 318i

sorry to mislead you as I am not too familiar with the m10. A bentley manual will help a lot.

I would say that the hp of that motor sucks if it is stock. My opinion is why have an E30 if you can't get after it!
