    fuel question

My fuel gauge doesn't work (stays on full all the time) and I want to know what it might be. Could it be the fuel level sensor on the fuel pump or just the cluster or something different all together.

the fuel gauge works by using a float switch sender in the tank. when full the float is all the way up and there is zero resistance, when empty the resistance is higher, depending on if you have an early car with the smaller tank and single sender or a late model car with a bigger tank and two senders the resistance will be slightly different, some searching around here will yield the exact numbers but off the top of my head its like 56 ohms empty on the older cars and 70 ohms on the later cars.

There are threads on this so just search around a bit.

basically though I would start by lifting up the rear seat and testing the sender itself. I never done it myself but like i said search aroundfor the thread
