    oil pan removal

Well, the Haynes manual does it again. (did a search, no luck) My good ole manual says all i need to do it take off all the bolts and pull the pan off. Well, it doesnt work that way on the e30. Basically it wont come off because it is hitting the oil pump and the rack wont let it drop down far enough. Whos done it, how do I do it? There is nothing left of my old gasket, pieces are falling down into the pan and i need to get it out and clean the entire thing and put my new gasket on. tia.

Thanks, I hope with the steering rack down a little, I can get to the bolts that hold the pump on.

i know at least on the m/s50 you just drain, hoist the engine, disconnect the motor mounts, undo the bolts (like 18 of them) and pull the fucker out, havn't done it on an m20, but hope that helps...

yah when my oil pan was in peices i tried as hard as i could to work the fucker outta there, but i ended up dropping my subframe and just propping up the engine to get it out... (didn't have to unbolt the motor mounts b/c they were already busted)

All back togther. I left for work on saturday and when i got back it was done. My dad got out and started working on it. Apparantly to do it you have to drop the steering rack, then get it low enough to take the oil pump off. I hear the pump is very difficult to remove. It was a chore, but it is taken care of.

Damn, your Dad did it the long way around if he took the oil pump off, you don't have to remove it at all.

I have asked Jordan to post this in the tech section a few times, but as of yet, he hasn't, so here it is on Fred Kim's site:

Wow... that actually seems like a bit more work. If I wasnt taking the tranny and clutch out, i might have tried that, but we spent awhile doing that, figuring the pan would be a 2 hour job. I will keep that in mind as an alternative though. Its all back together, got it out today and drove it.

I replaced the center support bearing, rebuilt shifter linkage, replaced tranny fluid, replaced rear main seal, replaced oil pan gasket, and did oil change. should take care of me for awhile.
