engine bogging down. very hard to drive around like this

i have a 1985 318i , it does have the orange light lit up in the dashboard...not sure if that is the check engine light.

whenever I let go of the throttle at high RPMs and try gunning it again immediately it will bog down for a second or two. It has a 5 speed so i know its not the tranny trying to shift itself, though it does feel very similar to that.

It happens in almost all RPM ranges and all 5 gears.

I also have problems when I start it up cold. the engine will rev around 400rpm and end up shutting off. Once it is warmed up after driving around a block or two, it will rise to 600rpm, and eventually to 1100rpm when idling and be fine.

I was wondering what these two problems could be coming from?

check fuel pressure/ fuel filter, also check your cap and rotor for any cracks or excessive wear. Eliminate easy fixes first
