    ac removal

My system has no freon in it, and being the poor college student that I am, its pretty much the last thing on my long list of stuff to do to my car. Anyways, I haven't done much work on cars before, but is removing the ac system a very tough job, and is it worth doing if I don't ever see myself getting it running again? Thanks

It is easy as hell to take out...a bit harder to put back in. Just don't be an idiot like me and cut the AC hoses. You can sell that stuff for some decent change on ebay.

It's pretty easy to get rid of, and the whole system will relieve about 50lbs from the front of the car. Nice, especially if you have a 6cyl.

Did it to my last car, and plan on doing it to the next. You can actually feel the weight difference under acceleration. Call it a placebo, it made a difference to me.

Not exactly 50lbs, but It'll get some weight off. (35lbs)

how tough is it to get the condensor out as well? and would I be wrong in assuming that without the condensor up front the radiator would be a little more effective as it would be getting cooler air straight from the front of the car?

I've been wondering the same. It appears you have to pull the radiator, and I need to do a cooling system flush before the cold season anyway, so that'd be something to do.

On removing the system, the hardest part is the compressor (I think). The lines are attached to a plate which bolts to the side of the compressor; you remove that plate (4 allen bolts I believe), then remove the 4 bolts holding the compressor onto the block and voila, it's gone. Make sure you disconnect the wiring harness from the main car one, it's a small round black plug that's tied down to the little "shelf" right above and outboard of the compressor.

Make sure you safely evacuate the refrigerant from the system first. It can be harmful to the environment. [/EPA] Off the record, I just dumped it out using a long screwdriver to hold the pins down in both valves.

Has anyone removed their hardlines? It doesn't look like much of a pain but just wondering.

When I repaced my timing belt I pulled the ac. it all unbolted in about 10 minutes.
