WTF could have caused this! (diff carnage)

Some of you may have seen an earlier thread from me about having my mute clunk in the rear end turn into banging on the track, and a binding feeling as the wheels go through the rotation.

Long story short, this was in my diff case. The one on the top left was jammed in the ring gear, causing the binding. The ring and pinion actually look good so maybe I don't have to find a new 3.25 afterall. But what in the world caused this! At first I started thinking the p/o maybe threw some bolts in there just to fuck with me... but then I saw there looked to be places for bolts in the ring gear, inside of the big mother bolts that hold it to the LSD. And sure enough that's where these came from, most of them are sheered off. As you can see one managed to come clean out...

Ripped the diff apart to see if the ring and pinion can be saved... the ring gear is clean but there's a pair of damaged teeth on the pinion, looks like a chunk of bolt got fused onto one tooth, freaky. I'm not sure if it can be saved... I guess it's just not worth the trouble since this is just a run of the mill E28 diff.

Still though, what the hell could have happened... other than that one bolt coming loose that has a rounded head (note above it's in one piece, then the others shook loose... the p/o is a mechanic, maybe he hacked this thing)
