AC/ Heater Blower Motor Housing Question

Ok here's the deal. I took out my blower motor cause it broke. its the aluminum heater core style. I see that the things on either side of it i guess were you get fresh air and stuff. One of the flaps were the cable connects is broken. I want to fix it before i put the blower motor back in the car. I dont even know the correct name for this part. Can some one help me figure this out. It looks like it might be supre difficult. thanks for any help!

I dont even know what piece that is or what it REALLY goes to. My flaps just flap up and down if you push them. They dont stay down ALL the time, but they will stay wherever you push them to with your fingers. What are those flaps for really anyways?

i think thats were you get fresh air or recuirculate the air.
