Any one who has done this is it hard? and do you have to get a new compressor or can you convert that too?

not hard, to do it right you just need to replace the reciever/drier, have the system vaccumed, add PAG-oil and charge with 134a

There is a BMW service doc that covers the conversion, let me see if I can dig it up.

          EDIT: try this:

a thomassr, dont convert. use freeze 12. mixes with r12, same characteristics, and similiar operating pressures, cools better than 134a which our systems werent made for. i get below 32 degree air out of mine, cold... on a day that is high humidity i can get my vents to blow out frost. chucker

I am TOTALLY going to get some of that, that conversion kit looks like the business. How do I tell how much is left in my system, because it still gets cool, just not cold.

Also, do i need to add the "ester lubricant" that i see on the site too?

according to BMW, r134a conversion blows just as cold as original r12. they have temperatures for different weather conditions comparing the two, and the difference is never more than 1-2 degrees.

all those r12 replacements are gimmicky. they are often just r134a with some specific lubricants and oils that protect r12 seals.
