Windows only work when door is open?

So my first e30 and the power windows and sunroof will only open when the drivers door is open. The switches only get power when the door pin is out and the interior lights are on. Is this a common e30 problem? Easy fix perhaps?
    Thanks for any help

There is absolutely no connection between door pins and window/sunroof power on a normal E30.

Go to www.wedophones.com and download your electrical manual.

    (manuals/automotive/BMW)

    Time to study!

Could the wire getting pinched when the door is closed have anything to do with the problem? Could something be shorting out between the door and body?

That would be my thought of what to check first...especially when it is so easy.

The sunroof is the odd one though, that is what throws my thinking for a loop.

dead mirror motor, bad connection, bad switch? anyone of those things could be the cause. probably the first or last. did you check your fuses also?

Check the connections on the door jam for corrotion and dirt, maybe you can use some electrical connector cleaner. Just pull the black rubber covers one on the door and the other on the chassis side and you'll see the pin connectors pull them, spray them and every thing will come back to life again. Good luck.

This, plus PULL APART THE PLUG!

The one in the door jamb, of course.

Sounds like a good place to start, pretty straight forward and easy.
                        Thanks!
