Fabricating Roof Rack Base?

So I've been thinking about it lately, and my dad's shop has plenty of scrap aluminum (assorted sheets, bars, etc.) and I'm wondering how difficult it would be to make my own base (out of aluminum) and then make the actual rack part out of some stained hardwood (also from the shop). Does anyone here have pictures of the base parts that attach to the rain channels, that they could post so I could get a rough idea of what shape I need, what hardware I need, etc.

You know you can buy used feet for really cheap... I got mine for like $50, and they are a lot more stable than what you will likely build unless you have some insane skillz...
